Turkey- Two Turkish journalists face 15 years imprisonment


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Two executives of a Turkish weekly magazine have been accused Wednesday of "inciting an armed uprising against the Turkish government" by an Istanbul prosecution officewhich demanded at least 15 years of prison for each journalist.

Nokta Magazineexecutive Cevheri Guven and editor-in-chief Murat Capan were remanded in custody on Nov.3 after the 24th issue showed a picture of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the cover with the headline "The beginning of Turkey’s civil war".

The story was published a day aftertheNov. 1general election in which theJustice and Development (AK) Party won the majority in parliament enabling it to govern alone.

According to the indictment the prosecutor claimed that through its coverage the weekly magazine tried to sabotage thegeneral election provoke certain segments of society against the Turkishpresident and government and inciting anarmed uprising.

The prosecutor demanded at least 15 years imprisonment for each journalist. Bothdenied all charges.

The court now has to acceptthe indictment.

The magazine was also confiscated back in September for manipulating an image depicting Erdogan taking a "selfie"photo in front of the coffin of aTurkish soldiermartyred by PKK terrorists in an attack in southeast Turkey.

ThePKKconsidered a terrorist organization also by the U.S. and the EU renewed its armed attacks this summer.

Since July official figures suggest more than 150 members of the security forces have been martyred and almost 1700PKKterrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq including airstrikes.
