Consumers of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) no longer need to worry about delays in restoring disconnected electricity and water services as the authority has installed new smart meters.

The Fewa has installed 11000 smart electricity and water meters in Ajman.

All the old meters in the emirate will be replaced with new smart ones according to Amira Al Amiri an engineer with the Fewa who made the announcement as part of the authority's activities during the Innovation Week. "It ... (is now) possible to get the exact consumption of electricity and water instantly and in an accurate way through a sophisticated electronic system."

These meters will save time effort and money for the Fewa.

"It is now possible to disconnect or cut the service of any consumer instantly in case they fail to pay bills or reconnect the same with a single click after the bills are paid."

Al Amiri said the Fewa will unveil more smart services during the Innovation Week. "The smart electricity and water meters are installed in new buildings and these give 100 per cent accurate readings."

Mohammed Saleh Director-General of the Fewa had earlier told Khaleej Times that the authority bought 40000 smart electricity meters each of which costs Dh240 to Dh500 depending on durability. A smart water meter costs Dh570.

All meters in Ajman Umm Al Quwain Ras Al Khaimah Fujairah and the Central Region will be connected to the authority via these meters.
