New civil nuclear deal between South Korea US comes into force

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Seoul Safar 13 1437 November 25 2015 SPA -- A new nuclear deal came into force Wednesday between
Seoul and Washington opening the possibility of South Korea
developing its own capacity to process nuclear material for fuel dpa reported.

The country's 23 nuclear power plants generate one third of its
electricity but are supplied by processed fuel delivered from the
US which has refused to allow South Korea to process any itself.

The new deal does not directly approve South Korea's processing of
nuclear material but provides for the possibility subject to future
approval by Washington.

The new terms agreed in April will be in place for 20 years
replacing a 1974 treaty.

"The new deal is a win-win deal that will strengthen the US-South
Korea alliance" Joo Chul-Gi South Korea's foreign affairs and
security chief told Yonhap News Agency in April.
