Elephants kill 350 Indians every year


(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) New Delhi Safar 13 1437 November 25 2015 SPA -- At least 350 people are killed in India each year
by elephants according to a government-backed study dpa reported.

Crops covering about 13000 hectares of land were also damaged by
elephants in 2013-14 according to the study by BM Arora president
of the Association of Indian Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians the
Times of India reported Wednesday.

Electric fences and deep ditches were inadequate to keep the
pachyderms out of agricultural fields the report said.

Regularly built without the participation of locals the fences are
often poorly constructed and not properly checked.

Some 30000 elephants live in India according to official figures
and the numbers are growing.
