Rights group decries alleged abuses at Egypt prison

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A human rights group has denounced what it says are widespread abuses being committed against inmates at a notorious prison in northern Egypt.

In a statement issued on Monday the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms said it had documented numerous abuses to which political detainees had been subjected at the Shbein al-Kom prison in Egypt's Nile Delta region.

"Prisoners are being subject to psychological and physical torture" the NGO asserted going on to cite frequent beatings and electric shocks as examples of some of the abuses allegedly committed against inmates.

The NGO went on to urge human rights activists civil society organizations and judicial figures to intervene to "stop these violations which often lead to death".

There has been no comment by the Egyptian authorities regarding the rights group’s allegations.

In recent weeks several opponents of Egypt’s army-backed regime have died in prison amid reports that the deaths were the result of torture and/or medical negligence by the prison authorities.

The Egyptian government for its part denies the claims saying inmates receive "appropriate care".

Since the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi in a 2013 military coup the Egyptian authorities have waged a harsh crackdown on dissent killing hundreds of Morsi’s supporters and detaining thousands.

Earlier this month the London-based Human Rights Monitor said that since Morsi’s overthrow it had documented the deaths of 330 jailed opponents of the regime.
