In Iran for gas meet Putin praises ties with Tehran

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At a meeting with Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday Russian President Vladimir Putin -- in reference to shared Russian-Iranian policy on the Syria conflict -- described Tehran as "an ally that can be depended upon in the region and the world".
Putin met Khamenei during his current visit to Iran to participate in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

In a statement issued by Khamenei’s office the Iranian leader asserted that the U.S. sought to "dominate" Syria and the Middle East -- a policy he added that constituted a threat to countries of the region especially Russia and Iran.

He went on to praise Putin’s regional and international policies over the past one and half years.

For his part Putin stressed that Russia and Iran both supported a "political solution" to the Syria conflict adding that the U.S. now hoped to achieve its objectives via negotiations since it had failed to achieve them on the battlefield.

"No one has the right to impose their opinion on the Syrian people or make decisions on their behalf regarding the composition of their government or the fate of the president [Bashar al-Assad]" Putin said. "Those who are calling for democracy have no right to oppose elections in Syria" he added.
