Three way battle at Women's T20 event in Doha

Doha to host event from November 29 to December 3; Teams from Qatar UAE and Oman to battle for title

DOHA: The second edition of the GCC Women’s T20 Cricket Tournament to be hosted by the Qatar Cricket Association will commence in Doha from November 29 it was announced yesterday.

The tournament will end on December 3 QCA confirmed yesterday.

Teams from the UAE and Oman will join Qatar’s national side at the week-long event to be held at the Asian Town Cricket Stadium in Industrial Area.

M A Shahid President QCA said the teams will arrive in Doha on November 28.

Manzoor Ahmad Secretary General QCA said Qatar’s squad for the event has been finalised by the selection committee in the presence of Tournament Director Gul Khan Jadoon Head of Women’s Cricket Mariam Gul Ms Shivani Misrah Syed Hassan Raza Amjad Baig and Shamasuddin.

The UAE team will be looking to defend their title they won last year when Kuwait finished second. Hosts Oman finished the inaugural event in third spot.

“Our team has worked hard during training sessions” Ahmed said yesterday.

“We hope to put up a great show for cricket fans” he added.

Oman Women’s Cricket Co-ordinator Vaishali Jesrani said her team ‘was ready’ for the event.

“We are working hard and we hope to put up a formidable team for the forthcoming tournament” Jesrani.

“The training camp is in full swing and only yesterday (Monday) we identified 18 probables out of which only 14 will travel to Doha” Vaishali said in a report.

She also said that Sajit Kumar who was the coach of the team in the inaugural edition will accompany the team as manager-cum-head coach while former Oman international Nilesh Parmar will provide his expertise to the team as coach.

“Also accompanying the team will be physio Anita Varadarajan” Vaishali said.

In January 2014 Pakistan’s national side topped a three-nation series by beating South Africa in the final at the same venue.

Pakistan capitalised on a poor batting display by South Africa to win the final of the PCB Qatar Women’s 20-Over Tri-series by seven wickets at Asian Town Cricket Stadium. Asmavia Iqbal and pacer Sania Khan picked up two wickets apiece as South Africa stuttered to 68 for 9 in their 20 overs.

Pakistan’s chase was guided by opener Javeria Khan who scored 38 off 46 balls with three fours.
