30 pct of cancer patients need palliative therapy- GFFCC chief


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT Nov 24 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control (GFFCC) Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh said Monday night that more than 2000 people are diagnosed as cancer patients in Kuwait annually."Thirty percent of those patients need palliative therapy at a particular stage of treatment" he said in his inaugural speech to a regional training course for palliative therapy personnel.The event being held under patronage of Kuwaiti Minister of Health Ali Al-Obaidi is co-organized by the GFFCC the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Office and the Health Ministry's palliative center."The course provides a platform for palliative therapy personnel in the Mediterranean basin countries to share experience with their peers in Kuwait on ways to improve cancer patients' well-being and make them better able to continue their life normally" Dr. Al-Saleh pointed out."The event gathered 30 trainees from all countries of the region alongside with trainers from the Geneva-based WHO Eastern Mediterranean Office" he said.He added that Kuwait society for combating smoking and cancer and the International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) had co-launched a regional Arab center for palliative therapy which has a 92-bed capacity and benefitted 527 patients since it was established in December 2010.
