The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) highlighted its sustainable projects at the third Arabian Tunnelling Conference & Exhibition 2015.

"Infrastructure is the major foundation in the building of cities and achieving sustainable development. We at Dewa work continuously to enhance and develop electricity and water infrastructure through a portfolio of promising projects. One of these important projects is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park which is one of the biggest strategic projects in the world. It is an independent power producer (IPP) in renewable energy and its capacity will be 1000 megawatts in 2019 and 3000 megawatts in 2030" said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer managing director & chief executive officer of Dewa in his opening speech to the conference.

"Dewa is now working to implement three smart initiatives. Through Shams Dubai we aim to encourage household and building owners to install solar photovoltaic panels to generate electricity to promote the use of clean and renewable energy. Smart applications and meters to improve response times and speed up service connection and Green Charger which establishes the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations" he added.

"Our intensive efforts have meant that the UAE represented by Dewa for the third year in a row has ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and fourth internationally for getting electricity according to the World Bank's Doing Business Report 2016."

Organised by the Society of Engineers in cooperation with the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) the event was attended by experts from the public and private sectors and regional and international experts in tunnelling and infrastructure. This year's conference was held under the theme 'Innovative Underground Infrastructure - Challenges and Opportunities.'

Approximately 600 experts from around the world attended the conference as well as the concurrent exhibition which hosted a large number of big international tunnelling and infrastructure companies from 40 countries.

Essa Al Maidoor Deputy Director General of Dubai Municipality and President of the Society of Engineer UAE inaugurated the event saying: "The UAE continues to achieve triumphs and accomplishments in the advancement of national development as UAE Vision 2021 encourages and inspires us to make the UAE amongst the best countries in the world."
