Five Sudanese migrants shot dead in Egypt's Sinai

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Five Sudanese migrants were shot dead on Monday in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula according to a local security source.

The migrants were killed in an exchange of fire between Egyptian security forces and human traffickers in the North Sinai city of Rafah the source said.

"Another 17 illegal migrants were injured in the shootout" the source told Anadolu Agency.

According to the same source the traffickers fled the scene unharmed.

The Egyptian authorities have yet to comment on the incident.

Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula is a transit hub for African migrants hoping to cross into Israel -- with which Sinai shares a border -- in search for work.

Last week at least 15 Sudanese migrants were reportedly killed in North Sinai during a shootout between Egyptian security forces and smugglers.
