Kenya recover to stun Uganda in Cecafa opener

Nairobi: Kenya recovered from their World Cup woes to beat arch-rivals Uganda 2-0 in their Cecafa Challenge Cup Group B opener at the Addis Ababa national stadium on Sunday.

Zambia-based striker Jacob Keli stunned the Ugandans when he scored from close range in the 29th minute to give Kenya a much-deserved lead.

Substitute Michael Olunga added the second early in the second half as Kenyan coach Bobby Williamson engineered his first victory against his former side.

"We are excited about the victory. We shall keep the focus for the next game" said Williamson who led Uganda to four Cecafa Cup titles in his 10-year stint as the Cranes' coach.

Kenya will next play Burundi who were 1-0 winners over Zanzibar on Saturday in their second match on Wednesday.

Earlier Tanzania thrashed Somalia 4-0 to move level on three points with Rwanda who stunned hosts Ethiopia 1-0 in the opening Group A match on Saturday.

John Bocco and Elias Maguli each grabbed a brace as Tanzania still smarting from a 7-0 mauling at the hands of Algeria in their 2018 World Cup qualifier in Blida five days earlier made an early impression in the tournament.

The matches move to the southern Ethiopian town of Awassa on Monday where South Sudan will face Djibouti in Group C while Sudan the losing finalists two year
