DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has implemented a new project in Syria to provide clean drinking water for local communities at a cost of $22500.

Many areas and towns in Syria suffer a severe lack of water due to vandalism cut-off and destroyed water infrastructure.

Locals resort to alternative means of securing water for drinking irrigation and other uses. To deal with this shortfall in water supplies QRCS staff studied the situation made a needs assessment in coordination with local partners and came out with a scheme to secure clean water for 10000 people in Turmanin a town in Mount Simeon district in northern Idlib countryside around 33km away from Aleppo City.

The project involves digging a 400-metre-deep surface water well building its control room and a 100 cubic metre tank and installing 30 solar panels with pump and other fittings.

The project was implemented over seven months in cooperation with Sham Alkhier Foundation. The well has begun supplying water to households and farmers.

Ghaith Nazir Tarabein of QRCS said “Securing pure and cheap water is the best solution for agriculture in the target areas.

“This can be attained only with free power from alternative and sustainable sources such as solar and wind energy. The project will also help attain food security in the neediest areas” he added.

This is one of many projects carried out by QRCS in support of the people affected by the Syrian conflict inside the war-torn country or in neighbouring countries.

A new project is under study to create jobs distribute winter aid and rebuild houses in different parts of Syria ahead of the looming snowy winter.
