Braintree resident Justin Weitbrecht earns auctioneers license at age 18

Auctioneering runs in the Weitbrecht family: like father like son.

Justin Weitbrecht a Braintree resident senior at Braintree High School and son of auctioneer Tom Weitbrecht recently celebrated two milestones in his life. First it was his 18th birthday; and then he earned his Massachusetts auctioneer’s license making him the one of the youngest persons in Massachusetts ever to achieve this designation.

The younger Weitbrecht though newly licensed is no stranger to the industry. He has worked with his Dad since the age of 9 fulfilling a variety of roles: checking people in at the auctions collecting money at the end and more. He does not plan to be a “caller” like his Dad but both Weitbrechts understand the importance of having another family member hold a license to keep the business going forward.

While Justin considers his future options as a senior at Braintree High School he is also working at Dedham Savings Bank as a central files representative. He is looking toward either Bridgewater State or Stonehill College next year. “I plan to stay local” Weitbrecht says adding “My interest is in business and marketing and I want to work in that field. My experience working with our family business has provided me with great experience."

Meantime with a 3.5 GPA in his senior year he seems well-positioned to be accepted at the college of his choice.

When not in school working at Dedham Savings Bank or helping out with auctions he enjoys a few hobbies of his own including collecting autographs (mostly of NASCAR drivers).

Weitbrecht has done his share of work in the family business including an auction at a local community center. He worked recently at a police ordered Tow auction on Halloween morning in Milford MA where he worked check-in/checkout clerked and spotted bids during the live auction.  On Sunday he attended the Massachusetts Auctioneers Association Auction Annual Convention where he sold an item in the fun auction for the first time as a licensed auctioneer.

His father Tom Weitbrecht said “We’re very proud of Justin’s accomplishment. It’s a great next step for him. He has attended and worked literally hundreds of auctions including fundraising auctions for non-profits business liquidations Police Ordered Tow Vehicle auctions Storage Auctions and even a Police unclaimed property auction for the Town of Braintree.”

He continued “Most people associate auctioneers almost exclusively with calling the auctions or bid calling and the auction chant.  The reality is bid calling accounts for a relatively small portion of an auctioneer’s professional responsibilities. There’s much more to an auction including evaluating assets appraising values developing marketing plans preparing assets for sale performing clerical functions associated with auctions and many other tasks take a much higher percentage of an auctioneer’s time than actually calling auctions.”

To prepare for the auctioneer’s license examination Weitbrecht studied at the Draper Auction Academy in Chelmsford. Ron Draper owner/instructor and the Vice President of the Massachusetts Auctioneers Association  said "Justin Weitbrecht at 17 years of age was the youngest student to ever graduate from my Commonwealth of MA auctioneer licensing program. He continued "In addition Justin scored one of the highest scores on the state exam in the more than 5 years I have taught the exam prep class. Justin comes from a successful auctioneer family so it's no surprise to me to see him excel as he did and will continue to do."
