New dams averted a catastrophe

(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: The construction of new dams helped to absorb 49 million cubic meters of rainwater recently.
Sultan Al-Dossari a spokesman for the Makkah governorate confirmed that the projects prevented flooding in many areas. 'Had it not been for the dams there would have been a huge disaster if such a quantity of water had entered the city.'
Al-Dosari said there were only three dams in Jeddah in the past with a total capacity of 18 million cubic meters. 'The number of dams has now increased to 14 with a capacity of 75 million cubic meters a fourfold increase in capacity' he said.
He said the government had also overseen the construction of drainage channels to expand their length from 66 km to 236 km an increase of fourfold in its length and downloading capacity.
The spokesman said that on Tuesday rains fell without stopping on Jeddah from nine in the morning until two in the afternoon.
'The rains fell on all parts of the city. According to the report of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) and the Saudi Geological Survey the intensity of rain ranged from 20 to 70 mm with volumes of water resulting from the rainfalls at 57 million cubic meters' he said.
He explained that 49 million cubic meters of water had fallen on the highlands east of Jeddah and 8 million cubic meters on the urban parts of the city. 'The danger of 49 million cubic meters of the rain floods was diminished by the dams which the Makkah governorate built. The dams held 32 million cubic meters while the drainage channels absorbed 17 million. Such amounts of water could have caused a major catastrophe in the city.'
He said the role of the Makkah governorate was to oversee supervise and monitor the implementation of the projects by other concerned bodies.
Meanwhile Makkah Civil Defense issued a statement on the conduct of the work being implemented by the committees to assess the damage and shelter citizens whose houses were damaged by the rain and floods in Jeddah and Bahra.
The statement said the committees are still working around the clock to assess the damage.
