Qatar- Dhow Festival ends today


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A rowing team competes in the traditional boat rowing race.

DOHA: The fifth Katara Traditional Dhow Festival concludes today with the awarding of winners of the various contest including the traditional pearl diving competition.

The pearl divers will be received at the Katara Beach this afternoon at the conclusion of the three-day competition which saw the participation of teams from Saudi Arabia Kuwait Bahrain Qatar and Oman.

The pearl diving teams along with the top three winners in the different competitions will be honoured at today’s closing ceremony. This year’s competitions comprised hand-line fishing rowing fishing using traps raising the sail Al Khatfah and traditional dhows race.

It is expected that spectators will enjoy today’s’ programme which will depict maritime heritage of Qatar and the GCC region.

Meanwhile an exciting traditional boat rowing race was held yesterday. The race on its fourth edition was organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Apart from the dhow and handicraft exhibition the gold and pearls market which is new to the festival has attracted many visitors. Qatar General Authority for specifications and standardization has a booth in which gold jewellery are checked to protect buyers.

Yocoub Yousef Al Mansouri an official from the Authority said the festival has given them opportunity to meet with the public and that they have noticed consumers are now cautious in buying gold items. Many women thronged the booth to have their jewellery examined using a machine which takes 30 seconds to test the gold which is better than having it placed in a chemical solution he added.
