Saudi- Diplomats outplay journalists in friendly match
(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: The Pakistan community held a cricket match here at the weekend in a fitting tribute to a popular and dedicated sports teacher who died recently.
Hamid Rasheed sports administrator at the Pakistan International School Jeddah (English Section) who died aged only 48 was an active member of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA).
The match was held at WPCA's Iskan grounds where Rasheed helped develop the talents of many young and promising cricketers from clubs and schools in Jeddah.
The pen-pushers and photojournalists from the Pakistan Journalists Forum (PJF) were no match for the adept consulate staff led by Deputy Consul General Asif Memon who won the match by seven wickets.
PJF Chairman Amir Mohammed Khan won the toss and elected to bat first. The journalists could only score 48 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 12 overs. They faced stiff bowling from the consulate's Naeem and Nadeem who bagged three wickets each and Asif Memon who took two scalps. Well-known photojournalist Yahya Ashfaq top scored with 17 runs.
The consulate team made light work of the target and achieved the required runs in 10.3 overs for the loss of only three wickets. Abubaker scored 13 runs and Waqar Jameel took two wickets.
Pakistani Consul General Shehryar Akbar Khan was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony along with Urdu News Editor in Chief Tareq Mishkhas WPCA president and former captain of the Saudi cricket team Junaid Iskander and WPCA Chief Executive Officer Zulfiqar Choudhry.
Amir M. Khan welcomed the guests and dignitaries and thanked the WPCA and Choudhry for organizing event. He paid rich tribute to Rasheed and prayed for Allah to grant him the best place in Paradise. "He was famous for his unique style of coaching and had a sweet personality" he said.
The consul general awarded the winning trophy to his team's skipper Asif Memon and player of the match award to top-scorer Ashfaq. At the end of the game the consul general faced a couple of deliveries from Mishkhas and did well to defend himself.
Prominent members of the two teams included Saeed Sarwar M. Jamil Rathore Asad Akram Liaqat Anjum Mohammed Amil Usmani Mujeebul Hassan and Syed Mussarat Khalil.
