UK's BBC to reduce budget by USD229m

(MENAFN) As BBC, the public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom faces a shortfall worsened by falling television ownership, it has revealed shocking budget cuts of USD229 million that threaten its sports coverage.

Accordingly, Nearly USD76 million of the savings will come from streamlining, meaning fewer divisions and senior managers, and are part of cuts declared earlier this year that will lead to 1,000 job losses by 2017.

Another USD53.4 million will be saved from the BBC's sports-rights budget, projecting it will lead to the loss of some existing rights and events, but it's doing everything possible to make sure the impact on the public is minimized.

Furthermore, the USD229 million is part of USD1.06 billion overall savings the BBC must find and allocate as it grapples with the staggering increase and expansion of online services at the expense of television ownership.
