Turkey's jobless rate surges to 10 percent in Aug

(MENAFN) Turkish unemployment grew to double digits in August on the back of months of sluggish economic activity and unregistered Syrian migrants entering the workforce in Turkey.

According to the latest data, the jobless rate touched 10.1 percent in the cited month, from 9.8 percent in the July period, and unchanged from the same period of the previous year.

Number of unemployed people aged 15 years old and over has become over 3 million, with a rise of 114,000 persons in the month of August as opposed to last year's corresponding month.

"Many Syrians have been preferred by employees as they constitute a cheaper labor force. And this has pushed the annual unemployment rate up by 0.4 percent," said an Investment Economist.
