QGF launches week long coaching clinic in Doha

DOHA: The Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) has attracted more than 20 trainees from across Asia and Africa for a week-long coaching clinic details revealed yesterday.

Ali Ahmed Al Hitmi President of QGF said trainees have arrived from Indonesia Jordan Palestine Yemen India Iran the Philippines Lebanon Egypt and South Africa besides Qatar.

“The coaches clinic will end on November 18” Al Hitmi said at Best Western Plus Hotel where the event is being organised.

Al Hitmi said the coaching clinic is being carried out in two shifts with emphasis on theory and video analysis.

World renown coaching experts like Chris Evans and Rick McCharles who has over 40 years of experience in coaching and leadership roles in world gymnastics are also in Doha.

Qatar players and officials are also featuring in the clinic it was revealed yesterday. Certificates will be handed over to successful participants of the clinic.

Lilia Ortiz FIG expert is also part of the clinic.

“I urged all those interested in learning the finer points of the sport from world’s best coaches should come and join the clinic” Al Hitmi said. “This clinic is part of the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) plans to develop the sport in all regions of the world” Al Hitmi said.

“Qatar Gymnastics Federation welcomes the FIG officials and we feel everybody who is attending the clinic will gain a lot at so many different levels” he added.

“This clinic is a way for preparing for the future” Al Hitmi said in a QGF statement released yesterday.

Doha will stage the 48th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2018 the first time that the global event will arrive in the Middle East.

“I take the opportunity to thank Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) for agreeing to host this clinic. We are working together as a team” Al Hitmi added.

McCharles said: “I am very pleased to return to Doha for the second time. I am glad to be of some help to budding coaches. Such clinics improve the quality of training at every level.

“We know that some of the best gymnasts are from China and Japan. America is also not far behind. Clearly Asia is rising in world gymnastics” he said.

When asked about Aspire Academy he said: “The Academy has staged numerous events over the years. The venue is one of the best in the world. I expect the World Championships in Doha as well in 2018.”

Abeer Al Buainain QGF assistant secretary-general said: “We feel everyone gains from attending such coaching clinic. We are pleased to host such high names from FIG.”
