Qatar- Australian musician holds workshops for students

Doha: Vision International School along with the American School of Doha hosted Australian musician composer and arranger Jon Madin also an internationally published author of the music book series Marimba Madness.

Madin spent two days working with students at Vision International School. He was approached by music teacher Lauren Corarito this February. She reached out to music teachers at the American School of Doha and both schools collaborated to bring Madin to Doha.

Madin is known for making “wacky instruments” or instruments made out of unusual items such as wood pipes and rubber gloves. He made shaker instruments with students from the American School of Doha and cardboard tube drums with students from Vision International School.

His workshop also featured marimbas — large wooden instruments that look like a piano but instead of keys they have wooden bars hit with rubber sticks to make sound.

School staff made three marimbas for students. Madin used them to teach boys and girls in grades 1-5 how to make music.

He also played along on his accordion or guitar and usually had a student or two standing on instruments called “dingboxes” (when you step on the box it makes a ding noise).
