Qatar- QRCS disaster team assesses quake hit areas in Afghanistan


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Qatar Red Crescent Society team tours one of the quake-hit areas.

DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has sent a team of disaster response experts to take part in damage assessment and outline a humanitarian intervention plan in quake-hit areas in Afghanistan.

Over eight days the team will make field assessments of the impact of the disaster identify intervention priorities evaluate QRCS projects and potential improvements and distribute urgent assistance based on assessment results. The assessment will focus on quake-hit regions that are accessible and need urgent interventions. Efforts will cover the severely damaged provinces of Nangarhar Badakhshan Kunar and Kabul QCRS said in a statement.

The team will interview partners local communities and leaders government officials NGOs and UN agencies in coordination with Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS). In Kabul the team visited a central hill to have an overview of the humanitarian situation in the province. It met ARCS and disaster management the governor of Kabul the minister of disaster management and humanitarian affairs and officials of International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and International Committee of the Red Cross. According to initial assessment 232 people were killed 1842 injured and 7000 homes damaged. Assessment continues in the remote districts of Badakhshan. Urgent needs are shelter food and non-food items house rebuilding water and sanitation healthcare and income generation. The team has distributed urgent aid to 7980 people in Badakhshan Takhar Nangarhar Kunar Nuristan and Laghman.
