Kuwaiti scientist advocates strict measures for conservation


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Strict measures should be taken to safeguard marine life and its boundless resources in Kuwait, said director of wildlife development at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Sameera Al-Sayyed Omar on Thursday.
In a statement to KUNA at the conclusion today of a three-day regional forum on environmental conservation, Dr. Omar warned against rampant fishing practices in Kuwait, saying they were depleting marine resources in the country's waterways.
Furthermore, she demanded protection of these resources from pollution caused by oil tankers and factories that may dump toxic materials in the sea.
She likewise came out strongly for the protection of the nation's desert environment, cautioning against winter and springtime camping out in the desert without some restrictions on campers' conduct regarding protection of their surroundings.
Many campers stomp on desert vegetation, jeopardizing thus their regrowth and affecting the survivability of wildlife in general, she said.
Dr. Omar also railed against air pollution in Kuwait, advising authorities to monitor factories that spew out air pollutants with impunity.
She acknowledged that Kuwait has the wherewithal to protect its marine and land and air pollution, but more efforts were needed to accomplish that.
Under the title ; "Innovative natural solutions: Motivating change" The 8th Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) has been held in Amman, Jordan from the 10th - 12th November, 2015 with Dr.Omar and others representing Kuwait. RCF aims at providing governments, NGOs, partners and the private sector a platform to discuss key conservation issues. In addition, the RCF contributes to strengthening knowledge and networking for biodiversity conservation in the Middle East and West Asia region.
