UAE pledges over US8 million to UN development funds

NEW YORK 12th November 2015 (WAM) -- The UAE recently pledged US$8.324 million in donations to a number of UN development funds and programmes for 2016.

The announcement was made in a statement during the United Nations Pledging Conference which was held in New York with the attendance of representatives of donor countries reaffirming the UAE's commitment to supporting the organisation's development activities.

Of the amount donated by the UAE for 2016 a total of $5 million will go to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women with $500000 dollars of this amount dedicated to counter violence within the context of the Security Council Resolution on Women Peace and Security and $1.8 million to the core budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East UNRWA.

A further $520000 will be given to the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA $500000 of that will go towards the Trust Fund for Disaster Relief Assistance. The United Nations Development Programme will receive $324000 and $20000 will go to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR. $100000 was pledged towards the core budget of the United Nations Children's Fund $50000 to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights $40000 towards the United Nations Environment Programme and $40000 to the United Nations Fund for South-South Cooperation.

In addition the UAE pledged $30000 towards the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes $30000 towards the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Fund and $10000 towards the Fund of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme.

The United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery will receive $30000 and the Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund for South-South Cooperation will get $20000. $10000 was allocated towards the United Nations Institute for Training and Research UNITAR and $10000 to the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA The UAE also pledged $10000 towards the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability $10000 to the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture $10000 to the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for the Convention to Combat Desertification $10000 to the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Researchand $100000 to the Cooperative Mechanism on Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore towards its Aid to Navigation Fund ANF.

These announced UAE contributions are not exhaustive and shall communicate further contributions to the secretariat once they are finalised and approved.
