Arab Human Rights Commission Reviews Sudan Human Rights Report


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Arab Human Rights Committee (ACHR) reviewed at the Cairo-based Arab League's headquarters the first report on human rights conditions presented by Sudan according to article 48 of the charter of Arab human rights.

ACHR Chairman Hadi bin Ali Al Yami expressed his thanks to Sudan for its commitment to presenting its first report to the committee, referring to the fact that this is the 8th report discussed by the committee since 2009.
Sudanese delegation discussed the content of the report and presented an explanation of its political and constitutional frames and the country's efforts in boosting and protecting civil, political, economic, social and cultural human rights, in addition to its commitment to the charter, especially equality, the right to life, protection from torture and countering slavery and human trafficking.

Sudanese delegation also discussed the judiciary independence and judicial asylum, civil and political liberties, right to education and work, right to development, in addition to the rights of persons with disabilities and family and child welfare.

The sessions witnessed the presence of some representatives of non-governmental organizations concerned with human rights. A number of these organizations presented some other reports reviewing human rights conditions in Sudan and the commitment of the country to the charter.

ACHR is a sub-committee of the charter of Arab human rights, which was adopted by the Arab summit in Tunisia in 2004 and entered into force in 2009 after being ratified by seven Arab countries. It's currently endorsed by 14 Arab countries.

Each of the member states presents a report to ACHR after the ratification in addition to a periodic report every three years reviewing the plans of each government in implementation of rights set forth in the charter.
