UAE Nuclear Regulator holds Public Forum in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI 10th November 2015 (WAM) -- The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation FANR hosted a forum today in Abu Dhabi to boost public awareness of FANR's role in overseeing the safe secure and peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the UAE.

The well-attended session featured a panel of FANR experts who described how FANR is establishing a framework of regulations to maximise the safety of nuclear and radiological activities in the country and to ensure that these activities are carried out in a way that protects workers the public and the environment. The panel presentations were then followed by an extensive question-and-answer session that addressed questions on a wide range of issues including nuclear safety radioactive waste management radiation safety emergency preparedness and employment and academic opportunities in the nuclear sector.

"As construction of the UAE's first nuclear power reactor in the UAE nears completion it's essential for the residents of Abu Dhabi to be aware of FANR's efforts to build a regulatory framework that supports the safe secure and peaceful nature of nuclear activities in the country" said Christer Viktorsson FANR's Director General. "We believe that engaging transparently with the public and other stakeholders is a key strategy towards building confidence in FANR's Mission."

In addition to members of the public forum attendees included local officials and representatives.
