(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The State of Kuwait on Monday announced a total of USD 6,419,000 in voluntary contributions to specialized agencies and funds of the United Nations for 2016.
The contributions stem from the country's sense of responsibility for realizing the post-2015 Development Agenda, Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi said in a speech to the UN conference on donations for developmental activities.
The post-2015 Development Agenda requires enhancement of the funding mechanisms and capitalizing on the role of innovative private mechanisms, he stated.
Kuwait's new contributions are: USD two million for the UNRWA, USD one million for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), USD for the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), USD 570,000 for the UN Development Program (UNDP), USD 500,000 for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), USD 500,000 for the UN-Habitat, USD 200,000 for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), USD 200,000 for the UN Environment Program (UNEP), USD 50,000 for the UN Women organization, USD 20,000 for the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), USD 10,000 for the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFT), USD 10,000 for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and USD 5,000 for the UN International Drug Control Program (UNDCP).
In addition, the State of Kuwait offers annual contributions to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) amounting to USD two million and USD 250,000 for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Ambassador Al-Otaibi noted.
He affirmed Kuwait's commitment to continue contributing to the UN-led humanitarian and developmental activities, and responding to the emergencies around the globe.
In response to the appeal issued by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in last August Kuwait offered USD 15 million for the agency to help the Palestinian students resume their study, he recalled.
Ambassador Al-Otaibi called on international donors to meet their obligations towards the developing countries through setting aside 0.7 percent of their respective GDP for the development aid.
