Jordan- King calls for global science policy, infrastructure

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) His Majesty King Abdullah II Saturday stressed the importance of adopting a global policy and infrastructure to support scientists, both male and female, particularly the youth, who are the scientists of the future.

In a video message to the 7th World Science Forum (WSF) held in the Hungarian capital Budapest, the King said scientific efforts are the catalyst to the survival and excellence of the human community, and that "we cannot build the inclusive, sustainable future this world needs, without the spirit and momentum of discovery and innovation that this Forum represents." "Today, worldwide, cooperation and inclusion are just as urgently needed. There is no dignity in possessing the scientific means to alleviate suffering in our world, if we lack the political and diplomatic will to act", he said.

King Abdullah said Jordan is committed to supporting its national capabilities in the field of technology and promoting innovation, adding that the Kingdom welcomes hosting the 2017 World Science Forum.

Towards the end of the session, HRH Princess Sumaya Bint Al Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society, took over the presidency of the 2017 forum.

In remarks on the occasion, Princess Sumaya emphasised the King's thoughts and the need to support scientists for their great contributions to building a better future for different peoples.

The 2015 World Science Forum was held under the theme 'the enabling power of science' to examine and highlight the many ways in which science improves quality of life for the benefit and advancement of society. Like in previous forums, the WSF programme will explore relevant topics linked to the theme and provide a platform for improved dialogue and collaboration between the scientific community, private sector, government and civil society. It also provides opportunities for young scientists and researchers to lead and participate in debates.

The biennial forum is one of the world's major science events and provides linkages between scientists, industry and policy makers. It brought together over 600 scientists, politicians, decision-makers and civil society representatives from around the world.

The 2015 WSF was organized by UNESCO, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the International Council for Science (ICSU), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC).
