Egypt calls for int'l protection of Palestinians

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Egypt called Sunday for serious action by the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people, and regretted that draft resolutions submitted to the UN Security Council in that regard had not been passed. Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement that the security tension and ongoing assaults against Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinians were the alarm bell to the big powers and the world community, urging an international effort, particularly by the United States, to nudge the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations and the political process.

The Palestinian issue will remain at the core of Egypt's foreign policy and that Cairo will take the lead in that endeavour, he pledged.

"Egypt will assume the responsibility to speak in the name of the Arab group at the Security Council", he said, reiterating that "the Palestinian cause will remain "the mother issue and the basis of Egypt's foreign policy".
