US welcomes meeting between presidents of China, Taiwan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US welcomes a meeting between leaders on both sides of Taiwan Strait and historic improvement in cross-Strait relations in recent years, after a landmark meeting between Chinese and Taiwanese Presidents, Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeu.
"The United States has a deep and abiding interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and we encourage further progress by both sides toward building ties, reducing tensions and promoting stability on the basis of dignity and respect," Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement released by the State Department.
"The United States remains committed to our one-China policy, based on the Three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act," Kerry said.
Xi and Ma were the first presidents to meet since 1949.
"Nothing can separate us," Xi told his Taiwanese counterpart in brief public remarks following a minute-long handshake. "We are one family." Ma told Xi both sides had been working "to replace conflict with dialogue ... We follow different political systems but we have developed military and economic cooperation," he said.
