An Emirati who is accused of killing his mother believing she practised witchcraft admitted to committing the murder as he appeared in a Sharjah court on Wednesday.

The Sharjah Police found the decomposed body of the mother a Danish citizen of Lebanese origin on June 17 this year. The defendant had been living in the flat with the corpse for some days.

The 29-year-old made a dramatic entry in the Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance greeting the presiding judge with Assalamualaikum. Dressed in a black suit he looked furious and started brushing his beard with both his hands.

When asked by the judge whether he committed the murder the defendant coolly replied in the affirmative as many in the court burst into tears. The suspect then looked at the judge and asked if the court was Sharia-compliant. He requested the judge to hold a closed hearing.

The suspect's court-appointed lawyer confirmed to Khaleej Times that the suspect confessed to killing his mother in court.

The lawyer Hani Al Jasmi requested the court to adjourn the hearing to hear the testimonies of the witnesses. He claimed the police did not factor in the "social circumstances and mental condition" of the defendant while investigating the case.

The defendant did not have a job and his mother was a housewife said the lawyer. All evidence shows that he had a good relationship with his mother said Al Hani. "This means he was pushed into committing the crime" the lawyer claimed. A representative from the Danish consulate in Dubai attended the hearing.

According to court records the police discovered the decomposed body only after they went to the defendant's flat to make him fetch money to pay for some items he stole from a supermarket at knife point.

The police found the body in the defendant's flat in Al Nakhla Tower in Al Mamzar area.

On the day the police received a call from the owner of a supermarket in the area who said the defendant went to the shop and stole items at knife point. The police arrested the defendant and escorted him to his flat so that he could fetch money to pay for the items. Outside his flat the police got a bad smell. On searching the flat the police discovered the partially decomposed body.

During interrogation the defendant told the police his aunt had called him from Lebanon informing him that his mother was practising witchcraft. He claimed to have found some papers that "proved" she was practicing it.

He told the police that he kept his hand over his mother's mouth as she slept and slit her throat. He told the police he was fully aware of what he did and had no regrets.
