UAE- EAD hosts groundwater innovation workshop to tackle water scarcity

ABU DHABI 4th November 2015 (WAM) -- The Environment AgencyAbu Dhabi EAD yesterday held a workshop to identify innovative water technologies from around the world addressing Abu Dhabi's specific needs in the efficient management and conservation of groundwater resources. Five technologies were presented at the workshop with a particular focus on servicing the agricultural industrial and residential sectors.

Sheikha Al Mazrouei Acting Executive Director Integrated Environment Policy and Planning at EAD said "Groundwater in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is a limited but vital resource that supports a variety of societal and commercial uses and benefits. Despite efforts to more effectively manage groundwater resources Abu Dhabi is confronted with increasing water scarcity. It is therefore essential for EAD and its partners to manage the supply and demand of groundwater in the emirate through a number of public policies that enable behavioural structural and technological changes to save water."

She added "The UAE government declared 2015 as the 'Year of Innovation' calling for collective action to cultivate innovation as a cornerstone of the country's long-term economic strength. To contribute to this effort EAD has been leading efforts to identify the most promising water technologies with the globally renowned Water Technology Approval Group forum to implement pioneering solutions to protect this vital resource of ours."

The five technologies which were presented to an audience of policy makers professionals and academics included the CMS5000 Monitoring System by Inficon from Germany the Buried diffuser by Chahtech from Tunisia Adsorption Desalination by MEDAD from Singapore the Waterboxx by Groasis from the USA and thin-film distillation by Aquaback also from the USA.

Safeguarding Abu Dhabi's groundwater resources is one of EAD's priority areas and it engages in a variety of conservation efforts towards this end. EAD works with partners to create and implement relevant policy legal framework regulations and other approaches to protect water resources. Their collaborative efforts will be highlighted during EAD's participation at the International Water Summit taking place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from January 18th-21st 2016 as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016.
