Saudi- Rowling's letter

(MENAFN- Arab News) I always enjoy reading Ramzy Baroud's articles. His objective approach and strong diction makes his writings stand out among his contemporaries. The article 'Disconnected from reality' (Nov. 3) was however a bit different. Overall it was a nice article that effectively raised some important questions by drawing parallels between the Israeli occupation of the holy lands and South Africa's Apartheid. But I believe that the writer is being unfair in his criticism of Harry Potter-famed author J. K. Rowling.
Rowling's call for building cultural bridges with Israel is undoubtedly indicative of her ignorance of the very issue but she is entitled to her opinion. She did not voice support to Israeli occupation. Excerpts from her letter quoted in the article shows that she is one of those many so-called progressive elements who without understanding the ground realities usually try to portray themselves as messengers of peace.
I personally know many people who in the name of peace and coexistence have warped notions about Israel and other aggressors. In the name of peace and coexistence one should not expect Palestinians to stop their struggle against those who have deprived them of their ancestral lands and are treating the sons and daughters of the soil as third-class citizens or as unwanted foreigners and intruders. Peace does not mean to ignore other people's wrong actions or allow others to usurp one's rights in order to maintain law and order or harmony. This is cowardice and so-called peace activists who believe in such notions are living in a fool's paradise. Rashid Jamil Jeddah
