Head of Iraqi National Congress Dies


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Iraqi National Congress (INC) leader, Ahmad Chalabi, died today at the age of 70, source close to the INC said.

Chalabi was a prominent Iraqi politician and known for his opposition to the regime of Saddam Hussein.

He left Iraq with his family in 1958 and returned after the overthrow of the regime in the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. He occupied several senior positions including membership of the governing council, deputy prime minister and head of De-Baathification commission which was established by the occupational authority leader in Iraq, Paul Bremer, 2003.

Chalabi and his party have joined the National Iraqi Alliance and became part of the Citizen Parliamentary Bloc where he held the post of Chairman of the Finance Committee in the House of Representatives.
