(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Special Representative to Syria Staffan de Mistura Monday called on all conflicting parties in Syria to ceasefire to give a chance for diplomacy.
De Mistura, speaking to reporters in Damascus at end of his talks with Syrian officials, said "what we need now is a ceasefire and a decline of violence in order to build on political efforts in Vienna to end the conflict that has been shattering the country for five years." The official SANA news agency quoted the UN envoy as saying his talks with the Syrian officials touched upon the Vienna talks because neither the Syrian government nor the opposition were present.
He said he briefed the Syrian officials about the outcome of the talks, which was attended by foreign ministers from Western and regional countries.
