ABU DHABI 2nd November 2015 (WAM) -- A UAE paper has said that if there's one government department that impacts the lives of Dubai residents and visitors on a daily basis it is the Roads and transport Authority RTA.

In an editorial on Monday Gulf News said "From the Metro to abras from salik to signals from service lanes to sleek highways the RTA touches the lives of people like no other".

"When the RTA was formed 10 years ago the idea was to transform the way Dubai moved. Since then it has delivered several mega projects; the world's longest driverless metro spanning 75km; the expansion of roads from 8715 lane-kilometres in 2006 to 13335 lane-kilometres now; the widening of Creek crossings and the advance transit system of the Dubai Tram.

"While doing so the RTA spent AED75 billion achieving savings of AED5.9 billion in terms of time and resources wasted in traffic jams. However entities delivering public services get bouquets and brickbats though not in equal measure. Pockets of congestion remain and parking remains a daily struggle for many.

The Dubai-based daily concluded "As Dubai grows the authority will face fresh challenges to keep the city moving. For example since 2005 the number of vehicles have doubled crossing the 1.5 million-mark this year. The RTA will have to continue to innovate in order to improve mobility and provide parking solutions."
