No political aims from upcoming census, PM

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour reiterated Saturday that there are no political goals behind the general population and housing census due to start on November 30 and run until December 10.

The census, he stressed, had economic, social, cultural and humanitarian dimensions rather than political aims, and is not related to "resettlement whatsoever".

The premier made the comments at the 10th Government Leaders Forum, organized by the Ministry of Public Sector Development.

The meeting, held at the Royal Cultural Center, brought together Planning Minister, Imad Falhoury, secretaries-general of ministries, general and executive managers and commissioners of government entities as well as officials and governors.

Transparency International Director-General, Cobus de Swardt, will address the forum about enhancing integrity and anti-corruption practices in public administration.

"All countries of the world, with no exceptions, carry out periodic censuses once in ten years, more or less, noting that Jordan runs censuses once in ten years based on the General Statistics Law", Ensour added.

He points to citizens' awareness that the data and figures yielded by the census would contribute to building the future on real scientific basis and give the decision-maker an outline of the Kingdom's needs of schools, universities, hospitals, pharmaceuticals and other services in a decade.

He assured that the census data will be confidential and "will be only for statistical purposes, and that no citizen will be affected since the census will be about numbers, not names."
