(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Amin Madani has welcomed the joint statement issued after the Vienna talks on the situation in Syria held yesterday, and said that it is a positive step into the right direction towards resolving the Syrian crisis.
The OIC Chief underscored the importance of the joint statement, which inter alia reaffirmed the importance of the territorial integrity of Syria as well as of continued diplomatic efforts towards ending the ongoing war in Syria.
He reiterated the OIC's constant support for the demands of the Syrian people for freedom, justice and equality, emphasizing the Organization's backing for all initiatives aiming at reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
He also welcomed the call for inviting all Syrian parties by the UN to engage in a political process that would lead to a new constitution and elections administered under the UN supervision, and a formula that would allow a ceasefire on the ground.
Secretary General Madani reiterated the OIC's condemnation of all the criminal acts perpetrated by Daesh and all similar terrorist organizations on the Syrian lands and reaffirmed the need to protect Syria against terrorism and its destructive repercussions in order to ensure stability for the whole region.
Madani hopes that the differences among the participants of the Vienna Talks would be narrowed down during the next round. He calls for the international community to take all measures necessary to translate the agreed items into a plan of action that would speed up the alleviation of the suffering of the Syrian people.
In this context, the OIC Secretary General underscored the need for giving greater attention to the issue of the Syrian refugees all over the world, and the necessity of intensifying the humanitarian action in this regard.
