Qatar- Renowned scholars to attend MEEA DI conference


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The scientific committee of the Middle East Economic Association (MEEA) announced today that it received more than 130 scholarly abstracts to participate in the Fifteenth International Annual Conference hosted by the School of Public Administration and Development Economics of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) to be held March 23-25 2016.

“This high number of abstracts submitted this year’s an indicator that the MEEA/DI conference will be one of the most important events to be held in Doha next year” said Professor Hassan Y Aly Dean of the School of Public Administration and Development Economics and the current president of the Middle East Economic Association.

The conference entitled “The Impact of Oil Price Changes on the Economic Growth and Development in the MENA Countries” has attracted a higher number of abstracts than the average.

“We received 50 more abstracts than we did in past MEEA conferences and the number of participants who authored or co-authored the paper’s proposals exceeded 200” said Dean Aly.

As for the countries representedit surpassed 35. “In addition to the usual submissions from Arab countries Iran Turkey Europe the US Canada and Australia there are countries participating for the first time ever such as Indonesia South Korea Cyprus and Malaysia” he said.

The list of some of the world-renowned economists who are expected to participate in the conference includes Professor James A Robinson of Harvard University and bestselling author of Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power Prosperity and Poverty.

Also scheduled to participate is Shantayanan DevarajanChief Economist Middle East and North Africa in the World Bank.

This annual conference addresses a number of very timely and topical issues such as the impact of oil shocks on economic growth in the MENA region; the way economic development reacts to oil prices under different market conditions;the current and future states of the oil shale industry; the impact of oil price drops on MENA’s financial markets and exchange rates; to name of few.

“The conference seeks to enrich the academic research in the field of energy and economics which would in turn promote positive discussion on economies of the Arab world GCC countries and Qatarin particular” said Dean Aly. Previous MEEA conferences were held in various international cities including Tunis Dubai Istanbul and Alexandria. It will be hosted in Doha for the first time.

The DI is an independent institute for learning and research based in Doha in the fields of social sciences humanities public administration and development economics.

Programmes of study are offered at the master’s degree level in its two schools: the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Public Administration and Development Economics. Designated as a not-for-profit private institution the DI operates exclusively for educational research and public service purposes.
