Only one opposition candidate wins seat in Egypt polls

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Only one opposition candidate was able to win a seat in the first round of Egypt’s parliamentary elections the first since the 2013 coup against President Mohamed Morsi.

Haitham al-Hariri was elected in the coastal city of Alexandria according to unofficial results.

“I believe we are going to join the opposition” Hariri told Anadolu Agency. “We are neither going to be in the majority nor form the government.”

Hariri said his program calls for the application of social justice a main motto of the January revolution which unseated autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

“Unless we apply social justice Egypt is going to face a major political crisis” he added.

Egypt has been roiled by turmoil since the military deposed Morsi the country’s first freely elected president in 2013.

“We are being forced to be in the opposition” Hariri who has supported the military move to oust Morsi said.

The parliamentary polls were boycotted by the Muslim Brotherhood the country’s oldest Islamist group.

The vote was marked by a low turnout which critics see as a “call for change.”

Unofficial results of the first round of the polls have shown that pro-regime politicians and a pro-military bloc dominated most seats.

A second round of the two-phase vote is scheduled for November.
