World-renowned medical treatments have been on the rise over the past decade in the Capital. With global surgeons and scientists making Abu Dhabi their second home many residents are now relying more on healthcare in the UAE than abroad.

The opening of Burjeel Medical Centre (BMC) in Al Shamkha on Tuesday under the patronage of Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Culture Youth and Community Development further outlines the importance of expanding medical facilities in the Capital.

Dr Ali Obaid Al Ali CEO Abu Dhabi Hospitals of VPS Healthcare stressed that it's vital to reach different communities including Al Shamkha. "Al Shamkha is a neighbourhood popular among the Emirati community with a growing group of expatriates" he added.

Clancey Francisco Po CEO of Burjeel Hospitals and Medical Centres for Abu Dhabi Doha and Oman told Khaleej Times that it's vital for residents to have the option to be treated in Abu Dhabi yet it's equally vital to provide global experts.

"If you have the best surgeons who have practiced at renowned centres then it's very easy for our patients who live here to seek treatment and simply go back home. This is what I call the continuity of care which is very important especially because it also relates to culture issues."

Po pointed out that basing the hospital on the 'hub and spoke model' is also important as it allows different medical treatments for different communities. He noted that patients in the spoke centres will be transferred to the hub centers if required. "The hub is where we have our main hospital whereas the spokes are the community outreach centres such as the Al Shamkha" he added.

The hospital will open a branch in Al Ain and will grow in Oman Doha Qatar and Kuwait. However the most prominent will be Burjeel Medical City in Mohammed bin Zayed City which is set to open in 2017.

"This will be the largest oncology hospital in the UAE" said Po.

"Today UAE is not considered as a developing country in medicine but as a developed country. We are now considered as one of the best countries in the world when it comes to medical profession."
