Turkey celebrates Republic Day

Republic Day of Turkey on Oct. 29 is the commemoration of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923

The celebrations marking the 92nd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey has begun with a ceremony at the Anitkabir mausoleum of founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the capital Ankara.

Headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the ceremony was attended by numerous state and military officials including Parliament Speaker Ismet Yilmaz Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu General Staff Chief General Hulusi Akar as well as opposition party leaders with the exception of except Nationalist Movement Party leader Devlet Bahceli.

Erdogan left a star-and-crescent wreath of red and white carnations on Ataturk's tomb and he observed a moment of silence with other attendees before the playing of the Turkish national anthem.

"We are happy to have reached the 92nd anniversary of the Republic of Turkey Turkey's Grand National Assembly of the Republic declared. We celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the Republic during historical developments which take place in our region. I would like to take this opportunity to express once again: we are determined to maintain our republic on the principle of one nation one homeland one flag and one state" Erdogan wrote in Anitkabir Memorial Book.

Erdogan will host a reception at the Presidential Palace in Ankara in the evening.

The official recognition of the Republic of Turkey took place on Oct. 29 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

On that day the new name of the nation and its status as a republic was declared.

After the declaration a vote occurred in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Ataturk a revolutionary statesman and founder of the Republic was elected the first president of the Republic of Turkey by unanimous vote.

Since then Turkey celebrates its Republic Day every year on Oct. 29.
