Kuwait Agrees to Defer Final Payment of War Reparations from Iraq to 2017

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kuwait has agreed, once more, to let Iraq postpone its final payment of reparations to the 1990-91 Gulf War, USD 4.6 billion to January 2017.

Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah received a message last July from his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al-Jaafari requesting delay of the last tranche of reparations for an additional year, Chairman of the Public Authority for Assessment of Compensation for Damages Resulting from Iraqi Aggression (PAAC) Khaled Ahmad Al-Mudhaf added.

According to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the approval to postpone the final pay is part of Kuwait's sympathy with Iraq and its understanding of the conditions in its neighboring country, Al-Mudhaf told the 80th session of the UN Compensation Commission (UNCC) board in Geneva.

The request was supported by Kuwait's government in solidarity with Iraq and the Iraqi people, with no effect whatsoever on the UNSC resolutions, he said.

This is the second time Kuwait approves a request by Baghdad to delay payment of final reparations. The first one was submitted in June, postponing it to 2016.
