DOHA: The Qatar Charity (QC) said yesterday that it will allocate $14m (QR51m approximately) in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to support education programmes for displaced Syrians and Syrian refugees. Both partners will provide 50 percent each of the target amount.

The move was announced by Yusuf Al Kuwari Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of QC at the opening session of a conference on humanitarian crises in Syria held here yesterday.

The event organised by QC was attended by 50 national regional and international organisations involved in humanitarian services relief and development works.

The conference was meant to discuss the deteriorating situation of Syrian refugees living in neighboring countries and those displaced inside Syria and explore ways of effective coordination in humanitarian works between these organisations.

“QC wants to reach out to local regional and international organisations providing humanitarian services and international donors for real coordination and to get attention on key projects like education and improving the living conditions of Syrians” said Al Kuwari.

The situation of refugees and displaced Syrians could go from bad to worse as the winter is approaching he added.

Syrian crisis is not limited to refugees and those displaced but it also affects the hundreds of thousands of Syrians stranded along the border areas due to continues shelling said Dr Mutlaq bin Majid Al Qahtani head of the department for organising international conferences at the foreign ministry.

People stuck at the border are facing severe challenges. They are in danger and winter season is about to begin. The contribution of international community towards providing necessary humanitarian support is declining said Al Qahtani.

Qatar is firmly standing with Syrian people and will continue to provide humanitarian aid until the crisis ends Al Qahtani added.

Recently Qatar set up a fund to rescue new generation of Syrian people.

The move aimed to provide education to Syrian children and give them vocational training. The Syrian crisis now in its fifth year has led to the displacement of more than twelve million people.

Among them approximately four million fled to Egypt Iraq Jordan Lebanon and Turkey. Approximately 85 percent of the refugees have settled far from refugee camps whereas large numbers headed to the countryside where agriculture is a source of income for the poorest Syrian families.
