Kuwait backs UN's efforts to promote world peace: Jarallah


(MENAFN- Arab Times) Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to UN efforts to shoulder its responsibility under the UN Charter for promoting peace, security, human rights and development around the globe. "The State of Kuwait, as a UN member, takes pride in the achievements made by the global organization in the political, social and economic fields over the last seven decades," he said in a speech at a celebration by the UN House in Kuwait to mark the 70th UN anniversary Monday evening.

Testified
"With great pride and appreciation we recall the campaign spearheaded by the UN and its Security Council to liberate Kuwait from the brutal Iraqi invasion in early 1990s," he said, noting that the liberation of Kuwait testified to the truth of the UN commitment to its mandate. Al-Jarallah urged doubling the efforts of the international community to address the new and complicated challenges and backing the activities of the specialized agencies of the UN. Meanwhile, Dr Hanan Hamdan, acting UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kuwait, praised Kuwait for its pioneering humanitarian role. "Since joining the UN in 1963, Kuwait has spared no effort in backing the humanitarian causes and supporting the UN responses to the various emergencies around the world," she said. The UN opened its first office, representing the UN Development Program (UNDP), in Kuwait in 1963 and since then other UN agencies followed suit, which took the number of the UN missions in Kuwait to 13 so far, she pointed out.

Pledging
Thanks to the humanitarian policy and wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait has hosted three international humanitarian pledging conferences for the Syrian people since 2013, Dr Hamdan pointed out. She added that the UN, since it was founded in 1945, has helped more than 80 countries to attain independence and deployed 69 peacekeeping missions to restore stability in several parts of the world. Meanwhile, Al-Jarallah stated late Monday that Kuwait is intensifying efforts to rally world's support for its nomination to a non-permanent member seat in the UN Security Council elections of 2018.

Kuwait's preparations for the UNSC elections are on full swing at different levels and in all the world continents, Al-Jarallah told reporters following his participation in a celebration of the 70th anniversary of launching UN charter. He went on to say that if elected, Kuwait would do its utmost to serve international causes during its two-year tenure.

On the various calls for reforming the UN charter, Al- Jarallah expressed Kuwait's support to the initiatives and proposals to upgrade the charter to help boost the UN role in resolving international disputes. He also announced that the British capital of London would play host for the fourth international aid pledging conference for Syria.
