Germany stresses necessity of combating terrorism, ending risks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen affirmed Tuesday that the Kurdistan Regional Government should give priority to combating terrorism and ending its repercussions.
The Kurdistan Region Government said in a statement that the minister expressed during a meeting with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani her joy for visiting the region for the third time.
She said there is an obvious progress in training and rehabilitating the Peshmerga fighters.
She affirmed her country's readiness to provide humanitarian and military aid to the people in the region, especially the internally displaced persons, calling for solving the region's problem through dialogue.
On his part, Barzani thanked the German government and people for providing support for the region since the start of attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on the region.
He highly lauded cooperation and coordination between the Peshmerga and Germany as well as all countries of the international coalition, expressing his hope for widening and deepening cooperation and coordination.
As for internal problems and obstacles, he said that they did not affect negatively the Peshmerga's morale, adding the government will seek to address these obstacles in collaboration with other political fronts.
He noted that the Kurdistan Regional Government welcomes any humanitarian and military aid, especially as the region is hosting a huge number of internally displaced persons who have been forced to flee due to the attacks of "terrorists." The two sides also discussed means of promoting ties between the region and neighboring countries and the current situation in the Middle East.
Earlier today, the German official met with the Kurdistan region President Masoud Barzani to discuss mutual files pertaining to combating ISIL and the situation of battlefronts after visiting a military training camp of Peshmerga in the city.
She arrived late Monday after visiting Baghdad. It is the third visit for her to Erbil this year since becoming the first female defense minister in German history.
