Mogherini: Arab initiative can bring peace in region

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU High Representative Federica Mogherini expressed great fear Tuesday that the continued violence in the Middle East could destroy the region and noted that the Arab peace initiative could restore regional security.
"This is not going to continue like this, every cycle of violence will be worse than the previous one and this will destroy the Middle East, so now is decision time," she told the European Parliament in Strasbourg tonight during a debate on the situation in the Middle East.
"There is an Arab peace initiative that can provide a regional framework for security and for peace. Only in a renewed regional framework peace is possible. Arab partners have stressed to me the readiness to work with the Quartet in the coming months," said the EU foreign policy chief.
"We actually have started already together with them, but like us we need to see determined leadership by the parties. Israeli and Palestinian leaders will have to take courageous choices, difficult one, but this is the only path they have towards peace, they can either move forward or watch chaos prevail in their own societies," warned Mogherini.
She also welcomed US Secretary of State John Kerry's initiative to address the situation in the Al Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem, and highlighted the role of Jordan in this.
Mogherini said that in the next few weeks the Quartet will engage directly with the parties.
"It is now up to the Israeli and Palestinian leadership to demonstrate with acts that their commitment for the two- State solution is real and not just fake, not just a slogan," she added.
