Palestinian stabs Israeli in West Bank, shot dead

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Palestinian man stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli in the southern West Bank before being shot dead, the army said on Monday.

"The assailant stabbed the Israeli in the neck, wounding him severely. The attacker was shot on site, resulting in his death. The wounded victim is now being evacuated for emergency medical care," a statement from the military read.

A military spokeswoman later clarified to AFP that the assailant was killed by soldiers.

Emergency medical services spokesman Magen David Adom said they evacuated the 19-year-old Israeli with a stab wound in his neck to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem, which said he was in a "serious and unstable condition."

The attack, which took place at the Beit Einun junction, north of Hebron, was the latest in nearly a month of Palestinian attacks, many of them in and around the flashpoint city.

On Sunday, a 17-year-old Palestinian girl was shot dead while allegedly trying to knife Israeli border police in Hebron.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces erupted at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound in September as Muslims protested an increase in Jewish visitors during their religious holidays.

According to the status quo in place since Israel seized the complex from Jordan in the 1967 war, Jews may visit the site but are forbidden from praying at what they call the Temple Mount.

Clashes at Al-Aqsa spiralled into a wave of attacks against Israelis, leaving eight dead since the beginning of October. One Israeli Jew and one Eritrean have also been killed after being mistaken for attackers.

Monday's attack takes the number of Palestinians killed in attempted attacks and clashes to 54.

An Israeli Arab attacker has also been killed.
