UNIFIL ready to broker permanent ceasefire between Lebanon, Israel

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon Major-General Luciano Portolano said Monday UNIFIL is ready to help Lebanon and Israel reach a permanent ceasefire within the framework of a long-term peace agreement.
The current calm and stability in south Lebanon is the fruit of cooperation between the UNIFIL, on one hand, and the Lebanese people and government, on the other, he said.
Maj.-Gen. Portolano made the comments in a speech on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, celebrated yesterday, October 25.
He urged continuation of the joint action to maintain stability in the region, and thanked the Lebanese people and government for backing up the activities of the UNIFIL.
Maj.-Gen. Portolano reaffirmed the mission's commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
He also renewed appreciation for the 39 UNIFIL troop-contributing countries.
The mission, established by UN Security Council resolutions 425 and 426 on 19 March 1978, has 10,479 peacekeepers and civilian personnel deployed in the areas between south Lebanon and north of the occupied Palestinian territories.
