EU welcomes upcoming Yemeni talks


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Union welcomed Monday the invitation by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the Yemeni government and parties including the Houthis to resume peace talks.
"The EU fully supports the efforts of the UNSG and the Special Envoy for Yemen to achieve a resumption of inclusive political negotiations, in accordance with the GCC initiative, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in particular resolutions 2140 and 2216," said Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement tonight.
"All the parties should engage without preconditions and in good faith in negotiations. In parallel, the implementation of practical confidence building measures will be essential to facilitate a return to the political track," it said.
On Friday, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad briefed the UN Security Council on upcoming talks on Yemen following the decision by the Government of Yemen to participate in these peace talks.
