Qatar- Appeal Court holds retrial of 3 engineers in bribery case

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Court of Appeal has held the retrial of three engineers who had been convicted by a lower court of tender-related bribery pertaining to the Doha Expressway project in 2006.

The engineers, citizens of a GCC country, Greece and Lebanon, were convicted of accepting bribes in lieu of revealing details of the project tender, worth QR200mn, to a foreign company, local Arabic daily Arayah reported yesterday.

Each of the three engineers, besides another convict, was given a jail term of 10 years by the Court of First Instance. Besides, the court ordered that the GCC citizen be dismissed from his job and pay a fine of QR500,000.

Later, the Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to two years in jail for each of the four defendants. Eventually, the Court of Cassation overturned the verdict against the three engineers and ordered their retrial.

The lawyers of the defendants argued that the charges were based on malice and had no foundation in terms of facts or documents as the project was accomplished without any technical violations according to the technical investigation committee of the case.
